The Truth About Debit Cards

  • Notify the bank if your address or phone number changes. This will prevent the zip code not matching when you make a purchase. Also our cards have a fraud protection plan that relies on current phone numbers to contact a customer when fraud is suspected.
  • Please notify the bank when you will be traveling. This will help you avoid a block on your card by our fraud protection program.
  • Please don’t rely on the balance you get at the ATM to balance your account. A transaction may be authorized but not cleared off your account or a check or service charge may still be outstanding.
  • Always keep a register with the date and amount of your transactions. You may forget a purchase or it may process under a different name than you are expecting. Example: A gas station may do business as one name and charges may post off of your account under the parent company’s name.
  • Know your limits for cash withdrawals and purchases. Every card has a limit. If you plan on making a large purchase, contact the bank first. These limits are there to protect you, not to inconvenience you. Please, keep that in mind when raising your limits.
  • If your card is missing, contact the bank right away. Your card can be blocked while you search for it. However once you hot card the card it can not be reactivated.
  • It is possible to overdraw your account with your debit card. Some businesses may not immediately authorize your transaction against your balance. Even if you don’t have printed checks, a service charge or a reoccurring monthly transaction can overdraw your account.
  • Unlike a check, there is no such thing as a stop payment on a debit card transaction. You can dispute the charge after it posts to your account, but you can’t prevent it from coming off your account.
  • A problem using your card may be a problem with the card terminal and not necessarily a problem with your card. Please keep any slip that has a denial reason or code printed on it as it will help us determine exactly what the problem is.
  • When ordering a new or a replacement card, be aware that it will take 1-2 weeks to receive it and if it is a replacement there is a $20 charge.
  • Many places will place an outstanding authorization against your card. Hotels and pay at the pump gas stations are just a couple of examples. The amount of these authorizations is determined by the business where you use the card. These authorizations can hold against your available balance for several days and they are NOT something that the bank can control or remove.
  • If you give your debit card information to a company for a monthly charge (ex: Netflix –Dish Network) that company can continue to use your information until you have fulfilled their cancellation requirements. Also if you have to hot card your card you will be required to contact these companies with your new card number.
  • The bank does not have access to your PIN number. We can help you choose a new one but can’t retrieve your old one for you.
  • Always remember that your debit card is a privilege and not an automatic part of account ownership.
  • If at all possible we recommend using a credit card, rather than your debit card when making online purchases.
